Protect Endosulfan Network (PEN) is a congregation, comprising of agriculturists who counsel and focus on implementation of best agricultural practices across the world. PEN stands in support of farmers who survey crop and pest management seriously. Having understood the dynamic population needs and environmental challenges, we view agriculture scientifically - rather than windfalls of season. Food scarcity and malnutrition pose challenges for us on one hand while we struggle with huge quantities of food grains being left inconsumable due to pest infestation.
We believe that the paradox - 'scarcity of food on earth' can be broken by applying techniques that are easily available. Pesticides are available in numerous potency levels and need to be used with care. One that attracts our concern the most is pesticide - Endosulfan which has been popular amongst farmers for 50 years. The Endosulfan is a routine spray used in fields for about half a century.
Endosulfan targets dreaded pests while protecting the pollinators such as beetles, bees - so vital for cross pollination. PEN drives an advocacy to support farmers who are using the Endosulfan for over three generations. Endosulfan works effectively against pest while maintaining colonies of beneficial pollinators. In the present scenario, with our understanding of agro-chemicals, it is clear that numerous protests against Endosulfan are voicing the detracting groups which have surfaced with opinions rather than proven cases. It is a scenario where more pesticides will be forced into markets and sprayed in crops, causing more harm than good. PEN works in favour of Endosulfan users and welcomes the role of a counselor to all stakeholders.
